DVCAG Tree Planting Programme 2025/2026

 Tree Planting Guidelines

Funding and In-Kind Support

As all the tree planting and organisational work is carried out by volunteers at no cost to DVCAG, the only costs are for the young trees and the materials to protect them.

Currently the trees cost just under £1 each, and the Tree Hugger protective tree shelters and stakes are £2.64 each.

Allowing for the young trees currently in our Tree Nursery, conveniently located at, and kindly provided at no charge by, Heaton House Farm; and protective materials we already have in stock for this season; we are seeking to raise around £4,000 to cover the costs of an additional 840 trees and 1,200 Tree Huggers and stakes.

Separate arrangements are in place for the plantings at Toothill Field, Rushton, which has funding from a Countryside Stewardship Scheme; and the Tawny Hotel, Consall, which is being funded entirely by our sponsor, John Pass Jewellers.

We are applying for funding from potential funding bodies. So far we have been granted £1,056 from the Peak District National Park Foundation’s Countryside and Nature Fund to buy 400 x Tree Huggers and stakes and await decisions on other applications.

Some landowners and other individuals also make donations. DVCAG is very grateful for all financial support received.

Tree#10K Celebration at Back Dane Cottage

On Saturday 8th March 2025, around 70 people attended an Event at Back Dane Cottage, organised by Dane Valley Climate Action Group to celebrate the achievement of DVCAG Volunteers in having planted their 10,000th tree since DVCAG's first tree planting in November 2019.

The Event was kicked off by Kelvin Fletcher, Emmerdale legend and winner of Strictly Come Dancing, who spoke of his positive experience of DVCAG Volunteers, and then unveiled the plaque which explains the background to the Orchard of Wild Fruit Trees, which had been provided and installed a few days earlier by DVCAG.

Access to the Event was on foot only and involved a 20 - 30 minutes walk from Danebridge. The arrangements were greatly facilitated both by the use of the car parks at the Swythamley and Heaton Centre and by the shuttle service from there down to Danebridge provided by Golden Green Travel.

After the formal 'opening' of the Orchard, refreshments were made available. Giles Meadows had donated a barrel of New Oak ale which had been specially brewed by Wincle Beer Co.to mark DVCAG's achievement of planting 10.000 trees; and Giles also provided the delicious homemade soups with tasty bread from Elnor Lane Artisan produce in Rushton Spencer.

How to register

About the plantings

The sessions will take place at locations around the Dane Valley area on private land. We will only be planting native broadleaf trees and will only plant at sites where woodland is appropriate for the conditions, usually land which is normally grazed and/or cut for silage.

All sessions will be approximately 9.30 - 12.30.

Please arrive promptly at the meeting points at the time indicated so that we can make a good start to each session.

What you will need to bring

Work gloves and a trowel / weeding fork would be ideal. We will also need one or two lump hammers for knocking in loose stakes, so if you have one that could be useful.

Ideally we need people who are ready and able to dig planting holes for the trees, but there are much lighter tasks for those unable to dig, such as protecting the trees with plastic guards. If you are able to dig please try to bring along your own spade and work/gardening gloves and ideally a mallet/lump hammer for erecting the tree guard stakes.

You will need to provide your own refreshments if you require any, and there will be no toilet facilities apart from what the countryside has to offer!

Also, please download and read the Tree Planting Guidelines using the button below before you arrive:
